Synonyms

Definition

Formication, essentially a form of paraesthesia or tactile hallucination (Psora), is an abnormal subjective cutaneous sensation similar to that of insects crawling over or within the skin, experienced spontaneously in the absence of stimulation (Psora).

Causes

Formication is a precise form of the general set of abnormal skin sensations known as paraesthesias and tactile hallucinations (Psora).

It is related with numerous disorders- physical or psychological side effect of substance abuse (Psora), diabetic neuropathy (Psora/ Syphilis), diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves (Psora/ Syphilis/ Sycosis), menopause, allergies (Psora/ Syphilis), skin cancer (Psora/ Syphilis/ Sycosis), herpes zoster (Psora/ Syphilis/ Sycosis), syphilis (Syphilis), Lyme disease (PSora/ Sycosis) and extreme alcohol withdrawal with delirium tremens (Psora/ Syphilis).

Formication can also sometimes be experienced during high fevers (Psora/ Sycosis). Itching, tingling and formication often occur when surfacing from a dive or during ascent to altitude (Psora).
